When the earthquake hit Haiti on August 14, We knew Hope for Haitians would respond, not in a panic, but with a clear plan that would make a meaningful difference. We immediately made it possible for people who were already contacting us to make a contribution toward that effort, but waited until we had a solid plan to deliver the aid before we began reaching out to our donors.

Creating an Effective Plan Forty-eight hours after the earthquake, Dr. Jean our partner at the HELP Foundation was on the ground near the epicenter providing aid and medical supplies. While there, he connected with local contacts, listened to how the relief situation was developing, and identified how we could provide effective assistance. We also met with Food For the Poor, one of our biggest partners, to identify the critical needs they were seeing and explore additional ways we could make a meaningful impact. The action plan we developed works with both of these partners to deliver shelter and food. Food for the Poor will help us get aid to more accessible communities, while Dr. Jean and the HELP Foundation will assist in getting aid into areas where the big trucks can’t go yet. Assistance during this first stage will be based in three different communities under the oversite of local pastors and Bishop Oge.

Cotes de Fer – This is the location of our first village. Pastor Clermont will coordinate on the ground support for assistance to nearby communities. Fortunately, Cotes de fer was largely spared, but one nearby community had 80% of its homes destroyed. We will send:

  • Tarps and tents
  • Food (rice and beans)
  • Water
  • Small rechargeable solar lights

Dame Marie – Located far out at the tip of the lower arm of Haiti, current access is only by 4×4 small trucks. From Dame Marie, Pastor Arisma will coordinate the assistance in Dame Marie and other nearby communities that were severely affected by delivering to families in need:

  • Tarps and tents
  • Food (rice and beans)
  • Water
  • Small rechargeable solar lights

Port au Prince – From the country headquarters of Food for the Poor, under the direction of Bishop Oge, we will partner with Food for the Poor to deliver critical aid to highly affected communities through distribution of:

  • Shelter – Tarps and tents
  • Sustenance – Food and water
