Irene – Pistere

Irene at her homeIrene is a 35-year-old mother of 4 children living in the village of Pistere in Northern Haiti. A trader by profession she supports her family with her ability to be successful at market. That success may help feed her family, but it was not enough to allow them to live in a safe, secure home. When she was chosen to receive a home built by Hope for Haitians it changed her life. She talked about the experience telling us,

“I am grateful that I was able to benefit from this project. This project came when I needed it most. The house I lived in could only fool the sun. In the event of rain, I had to stand, with a container in hand to protect my children from the rainwater.”

The climate of Haiti with scorching sun and a 7 month long rainy season, makes a solid roof essential for living with peace and dignity. Now in her new home, Irene can rest peacefully in all kinds of weather. She shared, “Today I sleep well with my family. Thank you again and may other families enjoy this too.”

Irene's daughterCurrent homes built by Hope for Haitians have two sleeping rooms. This is important for the privacy and security of girls as they mature into women. Irene’s daughter shared how much she appreciates this part of her home when she told us,

“I am more than delighted that my family was able to benefit from this house…. Today I have my own room. I am truly grateful to those who contributed to this project.”

In other parts of our conversation with her she indicated how a room of her own provides a sanctuary from the promiscuity of some in her community.

A secure home is more than just protection from the elements. It provides a place for everyone who lives in that home stability and security. From this new solid foundation, they can strive to build a better life for themselves and their family.

The community of Pistere is home to the largest project of Hope for Haitians. As of 2021, 170 sturdy cement block homes have been built with another 30 under construction.
