Hope for Haitians’ New Initiative in Northern Haiti

Hope for Haitians, in partnership with Brighten Haiti, has recently completed the installation of solar energy systems in two schools located in the communities of Dumas and Garde Saline, Northern Haiti. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance education and provide sustainable energy solutions in areas with limited resources.

The solar installations are designed not only to power the schools but to support critical educational programs focusing on literacy, mathematics, and general knowledge. Through these systems, schools now have access to engaging language and math programs, a library of 4,000 digital books, as well as all of Wikipedia in four languages—an invaluable resource in a region where educational materials are often scarce.

In addition to providing essential electricity for computer labs, the solar installations also power ceiling fans and lights, creating a more comfortable and conducive learning environment. This improvement is expected to enhance student engagement and overall learning outcomes in a region where educational resources are limited.

Community-Driven Development

This project is the result of a collaborative effort initiated by the leadership councils of the villages, underscoring Hope for Haitians’ commitment to community-led development. A local pastor oversaw one of the installations, while the principal of the second school guided the other. The strong involvement of community leaders has ensured the success of the project and reflects the growing recognition of education as a vital tool for the future of Haiti.

Building Skills for the Future

A key component of this project is its focus on skill-building for the local population. The solar systems were installed by Brighten Haiti’s Solar Apprentices, a group of young professionals being trained to help drive the solarization of Haiti—a country without domestic fossil fuel resources. Under the guidance of instructor Rolguens Meristil, the apprentices are gaining valuable, marketable skills that will enable them to contribute to Haiti’s growing renewable energy sector.

Involving two staff members and students from each school in the installation process also helped build local knowledge around the operation and maintenance of the solar systems. This hands-on experience ensures that the schools can maintain the systems independently, providing a lasting impact.

A Lifeline for Education

The long-term benefits of this project go beyond powering classrooms. The installed systems support computer labs that provide students with access to learning tools previously unavailable to them. These labs, equipped with laptops and servers, offer not only educational programs for students but also adult learning opportunities. In a country where over 60% of adults have never completed primary school and where free libraries are nonexistent, these labs provide adults with crucial access to educational resources.

The learning labs will be open to adults at designated times, potentially transforming access to education for the wider community. In addition, the inclusion of ceiling fans and lights powered by the solar systems will significantly improve the overall learning environment, making it more comfortable and functional for both students and teachers.

Looking Ahead

Hope for Haitians and Brighten Haiti are looking at expanding their efforts beyond schools to include the solarization of community centers in rural villages. These community centers play a pivotal role in the development of economic opportunities, enhancing the connectedness within the community, and supporting the electrical needs of mobile medical clinics that are frequently held in these villages.

This forward-looking vision reflects Hope for Haitians’ ongoing commitment to using renewable energy not just for education but as a means to foster broader sustainable community development across rural Haiti.
