In 2024, Hope for Haitians launched a transformative bakery initiative in collaboration with Au Bon Pain de Ton-Ro/Boulangerie et Pâtisserie, a for-profit bakery based in Trou du Nord, Haiti. This project, supported by the HELP Foundation and Village Leadership Councils, represents a key step in fostering economic independence, creating jobs, and improving local food accessibility for seven participating villages.

A Sustainable Partnership

The bakery partnership, is grounded in a agreement whereby Hope for Haitians invested funds to enhance the bakery’s infrastructure, purchase equipment, and train local staff. In return, the bakery committed to:

  • Providing at least two job opportunities to residents from each of the seven beneficiary villages.
  • Supplying high-quality bakery products for exclusive distribution by HFH-VLC in the villages.
  • Offering skill development and training for local employees to foster long-term growth.

This mutually beneficial arrangement does not involve HFH taking equity in the bakery, ensuring that local ownership and leadership remain central to the operation.

Empowering Communities

The exclusive distribution rights granted to HFH-VLC have allowed local leadership councils to establish a decentralized sales network. This setup enables:

  • Economic Benefits for Sellers and Councils: A 10% revenue-sharing model ensures that 5% of gross sales in each village benefits local sellers, while the remaining 5% supports community development projects. The funds are managed by Village Leadership Councils, empowering them to address unique local needs.
  • Job Creation and Training: Beyond direct employment, the bakery provides specialized training programs to enhance skill sets, preparing residents for long-term careers in the food production industry.
  • Infrastructure Growth: The bakery expanded its capacity, incorporating new ovens, mills, and distribution vehicles to meet the growing demands of the beneficiary communities.
    Overcoming Challenges

The agreement includes safeguards to ensure the sustainability of the partnership. For example, if any village fails to meet its responsibilities, the bakery and HFH-VLC will isolate the issue to avoid disruptions in other communities. Additionally, contingency plans are in place in the event of bakery closure, ensuring that the investment can be redirected to continue benefiting the villagers.

Looking Ahead

As the bakery project grows, HFH anticipates positive ripple effects across participating villages. Beyond providing fresh bread and employment, this initiative strengthens community ties and demonstrates the value of collaboration between for-profit enterprises and non-profit organizations.

This model of sustainable development reflects Hope for Haitians’ core mission to empower communities through self-reliance and innovation. By investing in local enterprises, Hope for Haitians continues to drive impactful change in Haiti’s rural areas.
